Ash Wednesday/The First Day of Lent

1 John 4:18There is no fear in love – dread does not exist. But perfect, complete love drives out fear, because fear involves the expectation of divine punishment, so the one who is afraid of God’s judgment is not perfected in love and has not grown into a sufficient understanding of God’s love.

Unfortunately many of us live in bondage (we are held captive) to the emotions of fear, guilt and shame. If we are the children of God – that is if we have been born from above through embracing the love of Jesus – our being held in bondage to these specific emotions are not from God and are not intended for God’s children. Fear has its roots in death. Jesus taught those who follow Him: “Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid! If you believe in God, believe also in me!” (John 14:1) Jesus went on to tell His disciples that we do not need to fear death because Jesus has prepared an eternal home for us. Jesus forever conquered death through His resurrection from the tomb. Since Jesus was resurrected those who follow Him and embrace His love are also freed from the curse of death. The promise of God for us in Hebrews 13:6 is that if we are God’s children “we may boldly confess and believe: The Lord is my helper! I will not fear. What can anyone do to me?” If you have not done so embrace the love of God today though faith in Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to begin to free you from the bondage of fear. Amen
