Hebrews 12:1 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders us and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us

Lent is a season of giving up certain things. Some give up coffee, chocolate, or cigarettes. We sometimes forget the reason why we are encouraged to set aside certain luxuries during Lent: We do this because Christ fasted for forty days during his time in the desert being tempted by Satan. We don’t want to give something up just for the sake of giving it up. We should be very prayerful and considerate in surrendering particular aspects of our lives. We should be striving at all times to set aside all of those things in our lives which keep us from becoming all that God intends for us to be. Perhaps it would be better for us to give up gossip instead of chocolate. Perhaps it would be better for us to give up arguments, bitterness, and insisting on having our own way instead of giving up coffee. Most importantly it would be the ultimate surrender to give up our will to Jesus instead of giving up a particular delicacy. Giving up our will to Jesus is the first step in having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. During Lent may we work to surrender all of those things which keep us from becoming the person God desires for us to become.  Amen

As violence and anger erupt in the city of Birmingham Alabama, Woodlawn High School football coach Tandy Gerelds (Nic Bishop) allows an outsider (Sean Astin) to speak to his players. His message of hope and love leads to a spiritual awakening that inspires star athlete Nathan, his teammates and other members of the community to overcome the hate and violence that surrounds them.
